Sir Joseph paxton was one of the remarkable men of the 19th. century. From humble beginnings he became the 6th. Duke of Devonshire's Head Gardner at the age of 23. He went on to transform the Chatsworth Estate and create the model village of Edensor, much as we see it today. He became the first person to grow the huge "Victoria Regina" lilly at Chatsworth. In 1850 he designed the Crystal Palace in London for the Great Exhibition of 1851. He later became the MP for Coventry and although he died in Sydenham, London, close to his Crystal Palace, he lies buried in Endsor churchyard. A four mile walk brings you to Chatsworth and Edensore, to complete his story.

In May 2006, John Merrill was thrilled to be made an Honorary Member of The Paxton Society.

New enlarged edition - January 2007 - includes photos of the Crystal Palace site in London and more about his railway architecture on the "Paxton" line - Ambergate to Rowsley, Derbyshire.
