John Smedley was born in Wirksworth into the hosiery business. He continued his father's business in Lea Mills, becoming a very successful and inventive businessman. In midlife, following an illness cured by hydropathy, ne continued his mill work but devoted much of his time to his spiritual beliefs and to hydropathy. More than 100 years later Matlock is dominated by his "Smedley's Hydro", now Derbyshire County Council offices, and Riber Castle. Both of which he designed and saw to their construction. His mill still flourishes producing high quality knitwear. The book briefly tells of his life and a seven mile walk from his mill brings you to the key places of his life.
