This book is a small part of a larger collection of "cures" and recipes, collected by Thomas Jackson, at a time when such knowledge was an essential part of everyday life. Today we visit the doctor for advice and a prescription, but in Victorian times, they had to rely on home made cures, concocted from domestic ingredients, supplemented by herbs gathered at the wayside and brought from the herbalist. Such would require collecting and preserving, and this would require considerable knowledge.

Thomas Jackson was born in Belper (Derbyshire) in 1854, becoming a Master Painter and Decorator, employing 25 tradesmen; he died in Heanor in 1921. He methodically and neatly wrote down each cure or advice in a journal, which can be clearly read today. He wrote for the local papers and planned to write a novel. This book gives a fascinating insight into Victorian life.
